So if you send thousands of requests at a server, you can overload that server and it won't have any requests open to reply to your game, you'll drop from all your sessions. They can only ACKnowledge so many requests at once.
Now when a server gets traffic, it replies saying i have a good connection (acknowledgement). I open my computer and start blasting web traffic at 2.2.2.2. i see one of my squad mates, IP is 2.2.2.2.
But if there is a chat overlay, a second session is created for your squad mates, so 1.1.1.1 will connect to a bunch of other IPs so VOIP (game chat) will work. So say your home IP was 1.1.1.1 and EA's was 6.6.6.6, your router would show a connection established between 1.1.1.1 and 6.6.6.6 as you are passing traffic. When you join a game you connect to a server EA owns. Battlefield probably uses some form of chat overlay.
